Girls trained in agro-processing and handicrafts in Gaza

Over 30 girls from the districts of Chibuto and Chókwè were trained in the processing of "nhemba beans" (Vigna unguiculata) and the art of making different straw articles. The training is part of the economic empowerment of girls as part of the "VIVA+ and Promotion of Human Rights project", implemented in Gaza Province since 2021.

Two groups benefited from this training, being 15 from Chibuto (beans processing) and 15 from Chókwe (handicrafts such as: baskets, hats, sieves, among others).

The beneficiaries say that this training will help them to avoid deviant and risky behaviour, which exposes them to situations of vulnerability to premature unions, early pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases.

"With life skills training we will be able to earn an income. From this income we'll be able to help with basic household expenses, we'll be able to support our parents in paying for our studies, we'll be able to pay for personal hygiene expenses for us as girls and much more", they reveal.

The VIVA+ and Promotion of Human Rights project brings together FDC and AMDEC, with the aim of increasing girls' knowledge about sexual and reproductive health, HIV/AIDS prevention, reducing social vulnerability to HIV infection, as well as promoting their access to legal aid and counselling.
